Education is critical to reduce reoffending says minister

Jo Stevens MP, talks to Prison Watch UK about the state of education in our prisons

Following the 2016 Prisoner Learning Alliance awards, we caught up with shadow prisons minister Jo Stevens, to talk about education in prisons.

“We know that there is a problem with reoffending, if we can get rehabilitation right we can change peoples lives… Prison educators play a significant role in that” said Jo Stevens.

The current climate is not conducive to learning and achievement. We have to create the right space to facilitate education, explained the shadow prisons minister. “We need to get prison numbers down, we’ve got to get prison officer numbers up and we’ve got to get appropriate funding in place”
